 Introduction

The Volunteer Bursary Program builds on existing recognition channels to celebrate achievements and help recognize the volunteers at Fraser Health. We offer the bursary program to active volunteers at Fraser Health, who are attending a recognized Canadian university, college or training institution (after high school). We award a $500 bursary to eligible volunteers, on a one-time basis, for any program, degree level, and discipline.  At the end of the fiscal year (before March), a bursary is awarded in each of the following health services areas:

  • Burnaby Hospital and Burnaby health services area.
  • Chilliwack Hospital and Chilliwack health services area.
  • Delta Hospital and Delta health services area.
  • Eagle Ridge Hospital and Tricitieshealth services area.
  • Fraser Canyon Hospital and Hope/Agassiz health services area.
  • Langley Memorial Hospital and Langley health services area.
  • Mission Memorial Hospital and Mission health services area.
  • Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC) and Abbotsford health services area.
  • Peace Arch Hospital and White Rock/South Surrey health services area.
  • Ridge Meadows and Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows health services area.
  • Royal Columbian Hospital and New Westminster health services area (including QPCC).
  • Surrey Memorial Hospital, Jim Patisson and Surrey health services area.

 Program Purpose

The volunteer bursary program is available for active volunteers, and is available along with recogntion tools recognize some of our amazing volunteers. It aims to:

  • Improve access for volunteers to achieve their educational goals with financial assistance.
  • Support career development and leadership skills for volunteers.
  • Encourage volunteers to apply for employment at Fraser Health, and continue to volunteer within Fraser Health once they have completed their training and/or post secondary education (after high school).
  • Provide an opportunity for managers/coordinators to recognize their volunteers;
  • Encourage volunteers to take an active role in their professional development.

Eligibility Criteria (Program Guidelines)

  1. Notify the Volunteer Resources Office of your intention to apply for the bursary.
  2. Active volunteer status at Fraser Health at the time of application. 
  3. Complete 50 volunteer hours within the past year (12 months or fiscal year) at the same site.
  4. Volunteer must send a copy of the registration or enrollment letter confirming attendance at full-time capacity. Send documents to People Services - Recognition via e-mail at  recognitionAtFH@fraserhealth.ca. (Note: volunteers must have already registered for the current academic year at an accredited Canadian university, college or training institute to apply for this year's bursary). 
  5. Complete the online Volunteer Bursary Program Application form.
  6. Write a short essay (250 words) outlining goals and career plans (submitted with the application form).

Special Notes:

  • Only active registered Fraser Health volunteers may apply for the bursary. Those who also hold both active Fraser Health employee status and volunteer status at Fraser Health are not eligible to apply.
  • Those waiting or have just received their post-secondary acceptance and are still in high school will not yet be eligible. You may submit an application for next year's bursary.
  • One bursary is received per student per duration of one program/degree/diploma/certificate (example: if you received a bursary at FH during your 2nd year of post secondary, you may not apply again during your 3rd year).
  • If the volunteer/student stops the program prior to the end of school year/program, the volunteer application will be reviewed as required. 

Bursary Application Process

Eligibility for bursary assistance is determined before the end of each fiscal year (Feb/March) after all the applications are selected. Application periods and deadlines vary depending on each application received and timeframe of the semester the recipient has registered for (example: Registered in the current Fall/Winter session students can apply during the Fall/Winter application cycle). Check the volunteer recognition website periodically for information about current application deadlines.
